New Music | Andrew Paul

The ever vigilant and reflective Andrew Neesley, known here from the classic album The Morning Bell by Jesus On The Mainline, has taken advantage of quarantine time to re-invent himself and his work. Writing primarily on guitar for the first time, Andrew Paul songs are driven by dynamic melodic lines, vacillating in style between heartland soul, indie rock, and good, old-fashioned rock-and-roll, with a bit of groove (à la Budos Band) thrown in the mix. Led by his characteristically natural, earthy vocals, the lyrics tend to cover personal experience: love songs for his partner, stories about his family and friends. The result is a casual but compelling style that feels both idiosyncratic and profound.

The first piece is dubbed Get Up, out today on all platforms.

‘A robust and uplifting anthem about hard-won independence (“My vision of truth is not / subject to your wishes”), the track was written by Andrew Paul and Tim Emmerick and recorded in Harlem and at Virtue and Vice Studios in Williamsburg. Showcasing Andrew Paul’s fervent, earthy vocals, “Get Up” is gritty and expansive, fueled by a steady, foot-stomping beat. The simple, beat-driven opening unfolds into an elaborate, booming tapestry of sound featuring lush organ, twisting guitar melodies, driving bass, crashing drums, and subtly distorted choral moments.’ (Andrew Paul)
